Project ID:  ENEP-RENP-II-18-02

Principal Investigator:  Dr. Shyam Sundar Khadka

Project Title: Technical Investigation of Tunnel Support Technology in Hydropower Projects Located in the Himalayan

Total Project Cost: 10,995,200.00                   Maximum ENEP Funding: 7,200,000.00

Project Partners

  • Partner 1: Hydro Tunneling & Research Pvt. Ltd, Kathmandu, Nepal
  • Partner 2: Department of Geosciences and Petroleum, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway.
  • Partner 3: Seoul National University (Department of Energy Systems Engineering), Seoul, Korea.

Project Objectives

  • Develop Tunnel rock support design framework for hydropower tunnel passes through weak rock mass and high overburden with major focus on existing design procedures and methods used in Nepal Himalaya. (Main Objective)
  • Documentation and development of a database of all available literature related to rock support design of hydropower tunnel in Nepal. (Long term objective)
  • Detailed assessment of the status of tunnel support design procedures and guidelines. (Short term Objective)

Expected Outcomes

  • Develop University’s lab for basic lab rock test.
  • The tunnel in Kathmandu University hillock is planned for academic purpose to show the different types of tunnel support to the student interested in tunnel engineering.
  • The rock masses along the Himalaya will be categorizes as it is vary in the Himalayan. Based on such rock mass categories, the excavation methods and support criteria will be defined so that it is very useful for the planning phase of tunneling.
